For the month of June, I am challenging myself. I will take a new image every day and post it on this blog for the whole month. The challenge is to come up with something new and fresh for 30 days. Reviews

Some people call reviews those scientific things that tell you which pixel is better than another. You might find mine a bit different, and more relaxed in outline. This stuff is damn important to me- its my livelyhood and all I've done is written out my process of what I do every day with my images. From out in the field, back to the office with all the drives and big computers. Enjoy going through it and I hope it is of some help.

Creative Challenge 2

I'm in town for the month and this time I'm simplifying the process by taking images with a phone. All images come straight from the phone taken at exactly 17h00 each day- where ever I am, or what ever I'm doing; with a little help from bestcamera.com onto the blog. No editing, no cropping- just images to enjoy and inspire.

About me

Shem is an award winning professional nature photographer, author, naturalist and through C4 Images and Safaris, a leading photo tour guide in Africa. He has two passions in life: Nature and Photography.

Both these have led him on many beautiful and exciting paths where he experiences nature’s wonderful places on earth and captures them to the best of his creative ability. His passion for natural areas and photography has led to a life of travel and creating environmental awareness through his photography. Shem is known for his creative representation of common subjects- leading to a diverse range of subject matter. His images have won national and international awards and his work is published worldwide.

How does he do this? In 2004 he set up C4 Images and Safaris, now the largest specialist photographic safari operator in Africa. Through C4 he has travelled with clients to many fascinating wildlife destinations- some as far away as Japan. Shem uses my specialist knowledge of African wildlife, African travel and wildlife photography to take clients, some of whom have travelled with him 6 times in the last 5 years, to witness the best wildlife photography action and scenes. He is lucky to now regard most of his client’s as good friends.

His experience and reputation has been built up through a lifetime of being immersed in nature. A formal background of a nature conservation and wildlife management also helps! Once he combined his photographic knowledge and skills, his services were of high demand. Read the comments of what some of Shem’s clients have to say about his service.

Of course, a photographer is only judged by the quality of the work he produces and over the years, Shem has been fortunate to have received numerous awards for his images. he was specially commended in the 2007 BBC Wildlife photographer of the year awards with the image ‘Suricat dinner’; he won the birds category in 2009 at the getaway-Fuji awards as well as the runner up in the Insect and reptile category; the image ‘Spike’ was awarded the image of the year by the PSSA for 2010 and over the last few years he has gathered another 7 highly commended awards in the Getaway-Fuji awards. You can see these images here.

In 2010 Shem supplied all the 56 images to the Africa Geographic wildlife calendar which went on to sell out within 2 months, the first time it has done so.
In 2009 Shem published his first book, ‘A landscape of Insects’, which is a visual celebration of photographs documenting how insects interact in our environment. In 2010 he released his second book ‘Insider’s guide: Top wildlife photography spots in South Africa’. This is a guide to the best places in SA to take good wildlife photographs, including information on equipment, seasons and many practical tips. He is currently working on three more books for 2011, one which will be the second in the ‘Insider Guide’ series.

For some more reading: This article also says a bit more about Shem’s thoughts on photo tours.
Also read C4 Images and Safaris profile about Shem’s photo specialities when on safari.
