Elephant time – June 14

Mashatu is known for its elephants, so this morning was as good as any to spend some time with a relaxed breeding herd. Little did we know just how relaxed they were to be...

We located a herd walking quickly towards a riverine area. Passing us they were in a definite hurry, but once they hit the browsing bush, they relaxed and started feeding contentedly.
We positioned the vehicle a few meters in front of them and they slowly meandered right past and around us. All of a sudden the long lenses weren’t focussing and the wide angles were coming out!

The image of the trunk pulling out some grass is one I have wanted for a while and one that has managed to elude me for some while. I was happy to finally have the opportunity to get this image. To show you how close these guys were, the wide angle shot shows the elephant I was photographing with the long lens...! Good thing the 200-400 focuses to 2m!
