Late night star

It's amazing what you find editing images in the dark at 23h16 on a Tuesday night. I never even knew of this image. Was just editing through the masses, culling like crazy and this one popped up on the screen...
Thought I'd put it out there while I try get through the rest.
Definitely one for the 100. Enjoy.

5 stops to freedom

Being in one of the most exciting wildlife destinations for three weeks really makes you assess your photography. I could have gone on attempting cheetah portraits every day, or I could try something different, just to challenge myself. This morning was one of the most fantastic days ever. Straight out of camp we encountered thousands of wildebeest charging towards the Mara River. We followed and waited as they continued to pour into the ever contracting, ever narrowing appendix of land that very quickly turned into a dust storm by the incessant hooves on ground.

Using 5 stops of graduated filters, I chose a wide-angle lens to convey the whole event, metered off the ground and took this shot; and it moved me.

Mara chronicles 2

Another week passes by in the Mara and another week of extreme animal action continues. Just after 10 000 animals crossed over to our side of the Mara River, they then all decided to head back to the triangle. Coming back from one night in Nairobi was like seeing a completely new place. Instead of the hundreds of content thousands of wildebeest grazing near camp, we arrived to stomping hooves and massive clouds of dust. In 2 days we witnessed 100 000 thousand wildebeest crossing over the Mara River. Seeing it was a sensation so acute that you just had to stop, wipe the dust from your face and take in the awe of the spectacle in between trying to capture it with a camera.

masai mara, shem compion,

The real sensation of a crossing is not seeing it- but rather the tactile awareness of the smell, noise and emotion in such an event. It was a perfect start to a great week with great clients.
Now for the last week and I have to wonder what this dynamic ecosystem will deliver in the coming week.
Enjoy the pictures.

Masai Mara Update

It’s been a great first week in the Mara. Wait let me rephrase that it’s been an absolutely manic, crazily busy first week in the Mara. I hate to say it, but our camp was in the perfect place for all the action on the plains. One day we had 15 000 wildebeest cross in front of our camp, with just us there to witness it. The faces I saw after the event were ones of sheer disbelief, overwhelmed emotions, drained batteries and full memory cards.

And that was only after a morning of leopard hunting, lions killing a warthog and cheetahs on a kill- all before breakfast!
It’s hard to describe such a place fully, so here are a few images to give you a glimpse of what it was like.
Chat soon after week 2…
